Darlene Luther was born in Cloquet, Minnesota in 1947 and graduated from White Bear Lake High School in 1965, later graduating from the University of St. Thomas with a degree in business administration. She was the wife of Congressman Bill Luther. She died from stomach cancer on January 30, 2002.

During her career she sponsored the Minnesota at home child care tax credit, bus safety legislation for school buses and Twin Cities area buses, and secured funding for a organ donor mobile unit, an education vehicle that travels around the country and visits schools, businesses, health fairs, and other events. She served on, among others, the Economic Equality Subcommittee, the Capital Investment, Civil Law, and Redistricting Committees, and was appointed to the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission on July 8th, 1994.
