Gildo Canale, a native of Crystal Falls, Michigan, began his Northern Michigan University career as NMU's first full-time trainer. He also served as director of intramurals, head golf coach, assistant athletic director and was appointed director of athletics in 1971. Canale served as director of athletics until 1985. Canale continued to serve NMU until his retirement in 1993. Canale was inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and the NMU Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. He received the NMU Alumni Service Award in 1995. Canale died on February 26, 2009 at the age of 77.
