New Mexico Normal School at Las Vegas was established by a legislative act in 1893 (1893 Laws of N.M., Chp. 19, Sec. 1). In 1899 a legislative act changed the name to New Mexico Normal University (1899 Laws of N.M., Chp. 18, Sec. 1). In 1941 a legislative act changed the name to New Mexico Highlands University (1941 Laws of N.M., Chp. 130, Sec. 1).
