James Wilson Moore (1797-1874) is considered the "Father of Presbyterianism in Arkansas." In 1827 he was licensed and ordained by Northumberland Presbytery and commissioned as a missionary to Arkansas by the Board of Home Missions. The first Presbyterian minister in the Arkansas Territory, he organized the First Presbyterian Church of Little Rock in 1828 and was active in organizing the Presbytery of Arkansas in 1835, which he served as its first stated clerk. He later moved to Ruralia and organized Sylvania Church and Sylvania Academy.
