Levine, Hyman

Hide Profile

Hyman Levine served as the Political Action Director of Local 28 of the Sheet Metal Workers International Association in 1978. He also served on the Safety Committee of Simpson Metal at Morgan Station Post Office.

He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Sick and Benevolent Association, which was founded in 1906-7 as a mutual benefit association for Jewish members of the trade. The Benevolent Association, with two other social clubs, the Get-Together Club and the Kitchen Equipment Club, organized against the predominantly Irish and Italian Paramount Club that dominated the Sheet Metal Workers Local 28. The independent groups stressed improvements in pension and welfare funds, organizing the unorganized, the International's strike fund, and integration. The Benevolent Association dissolved in the late 1970s with the election of an independent candidate.
