Huftalen, Sarah Gillespie, 1865-1955
Variant namesSarah Gillespie Huftalen taught in rural school and was elected superintendent of schools in Page County, Iowa. She helped found, and served as president of the Rural Section of the Iowa State Teachers' Association. Sarah taught both in public schools and colleges until forced to retire at the age of seventy. She worked to include vocational training in rural schools and published articles on the subject as well as taking part in the budding 4-H movement. Sarah was also a strong supporter of women's suffrage and led Manchester Equal Suffrage Association. Emily Hawley Gillespie was born in 1838 and taught before marrying James Gillespie in 1862 and becoming a farm wife. Emily was active in the Soldier's Relief Society during the Civil War. She was a Universalist and had a strong interest in phrenology. She died in 1888.
