Brother of novelists Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë, of Haworth, England; collaborated with Charlotte Brontë on stories about imaginary kingdom of Angria, 1829-1840, and wrote verse; translated first book of Horace's odes (privately printed 1923); attempted career as portrait painter without success; worked as a railway clerk.
