The Rotary Club of Indianapolis was founded in 1913as a social club for businessmen. Early activities included a Tuesday luncheon meeting, social outings, and sports. During World War I the club changed its focus to community service, maintaining a recreation hall for soldiers. In the 1930s the club helped the poor and raised money to construct the Riley Convalescent Center. Youth programs, initiated in the 1940s, included 4-H sponsorships and career counselling. The Rotary Foundation, Inc., a separate organization run by Rotary members, was established in the 1940s to aid physically and mentally disabled adults and children. The club opened membership to women in 1987.
