Calligrapher.

Born in 1907 in Michigan, James Hayes came to Chicago in 1926 to attend the School of the Art Institute, where his mentor was Ernst F. Detterer (later Custodian of the John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing at the Newberry Library). After working in the display department at Marshall Field & Co (1932-1940), Hayes began to work exclusively as a freelance lettering artist for clients including Ryerson Steel, R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., and others. He also directed the Newberry Library's Calligraphy Study Group (1947-1960). Hayes is famous as a designer of calligraphic bookplates and his work was widely collected and exhibited. In 1971 he moved to Colorado, where he continued to work, largely for Chicago clients.
