The Center for the Study of Women and Gender was an educational and research component of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) from 1993-2001. The Center was responsible for planning and executing Women's History Week, holding conferences on women's history topics, developing degree programs in women and gender studies, and administering grants. The Center's faculty was also integral in the establishment of the Archives for Research on Women and Gender, a unit of the UTSA Library that would later become the Archives and Special Collections Department. Professor Linda Schott was the Center's Director. The Center was overseen by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences until that college's dissolution in 2000. Due to budgetary reallocations, the Center was reclassified as a program within the history department in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts in 2001.
The Center for the Study of Women and Gender was developed through a strategic initiative written by Dr. Linda K. Pritchard in the spring of 1992. The Center began operations in Fall 1993, and was formally inaugurated at the city-wide opening of Women's History Month in March 1994. A formal announcement from March 1, 1994 outlines the goals of the Center for the Study of Women and Gender: To promote, facilitate, and disseminate research, by UTSA faculty and independent scholars, on women and gender; To promote collaboration between academic institutions, corporate America, and the public sector on issues such as women's health, sexual harassment, affirmative action, and promotion and pay inequities; To help elementary and secondary schools as well as institutions of higher education to integrate scholarship on women and gender into their curricula; To collect primary historical sources relating to women and gender in San Antonio and throughout South Texas; and to sponsor public programming which explores a variety of women and gender policy issues.
In August 2001, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Guy Bailey announced that, due to budgetary reallocations, four educational and research components at UTSA would be reorganized. The Center for the Study of Women and Gender would be reclassified as a program within the history department of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. All administrative staff were transferred to other areas. The Archives for Research and Gender remained, and Women's History Week was overseen by the history department. Other affected components were the Hispanic Research Center, the Institute for Studies in Business, and the Metropolitan Research and Policy Institute.
