Ernest J. White (b. 1917, Falls City, Neb.-d. March 18, 1988), U.S. Air Force officer, graduated from West Point in 1942 and completed pilot training shortly thereafter. He was assigned to the 359th Fighter Squadron in 1943 as a flight leader, later becoming squadron commander. He later served as assistant director of fighters for the 8th Air Force. During World War II he flew P-47s and P-51s in Europe. Following assignments in the U.S., he went to Korea in 1952 as commander, 502nd Tactical Control Group, flying F-86 Sabre jets with the 5th Air Force. He also served as professor of aerospace science at Miami University in Ohio from 1953 to 1956. In 1959 he became commander, 551st Aircraft Early Warning Control Wing for Air Defense Command, and base commander, Otis Air Force Base. General White spent several years with the National Security Council, then assumed command of the 6200th Material Wing in the Philippines. In 1967 he became commander, 61st Military Airlift Wing. Having flown 235 combat missions, he retired in 1970.
