Burkitt, Francis Crawford, Professor
Variant namesFrancis Crawford Burkitt (1864-1935) was educated at Harrow, before studying divinity at Trinity College, Cambridge. He became university lecturer in palaeography in 1903, and was Norrisian professor of divinity at Cambridge, 1905-35. His publications included 'Text and Versions' in the Encyclopaedia Biblica (1903); an edition of the old Syriac Gospels (1904); The Gospel History and its Transmission (1906); Eucharist and Sacrifice (1921); liturgical and Franciscan studies; and works on Mancichaeism and Gnosticism. He was practising member of the Church of England modernist School.

Francis Crawford Burkitt (1864-1935) was born in London on 3 September 1864. He attended a day school, before entering Harrow in 1878, and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1883 (B.A., 1886; M.A., 1890; B.D. and D.D., 1915). Burkitt became university lecturer in palaeography in 1903, and was Norrisian professor of divinity, 1905-1935. He studied oriental languages, and developed a reputation as a Syriac scholar. He produced works on the Old and New Testaments, and on Mancichaeism and Gnosticism. Burkitt died in Cambridge on 11 May 1935.
