John Edwin Upston (b. Sept. 9, 1890, Tawas City, Mich.-d. Aug. 18, 1952) received his commission in the aviation section in 1918 and served with the 63rd Service Squadron then 25th Bombardment Squadron at France Field in the Panama Canal Zone from March 1923 to February 1926. He was a White House aide from 1928 to 1930, then graduated from the Air Corps Tactical School in 1935, then the Command and General Staff School in 1937. He reached the rank brigadier general in Deceber 1942 and saw duty in China-Burma-India in 1944 and 1945. After World War II, he commanded the Fourth Air Force from 1948 to 1950. He retired from Army service in September 1950.
