Born in Carthage, Maine on Apr. 3, 1825; grew up in Iowa and first came to the gold fields in Kansas Territory (later Colorado Territory) in 1858. He was a Colo. pioneer businessman, surveyor, Indian agent and publisher of an early controversial guide to the Colo. gold fields: History of the gold discoveries on the South Platte River by Luke Tierney (1859). Died in Denver, Colo. on Mar. 9, 1887.
