Edwin L. Nickerson was a Union soldier who was stationed at the Custom House in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served under General Benjamin Franklin Butler before he began drilling at camps Kearney and Stearns in the "Reserve Brigade" of the United States Army, Department of the Gulf. This unit was commanded by Brigadier General Godfrey Weitzel from September 22, 1862 until January 3, 1863. The Vermont 7th Infantry of the Reserve Brigade was the first to occupy Camp Kearney in October, 1862. Mentioned in his letters are Miss Jennings and his brothers (?), Mark, Henry, and Uriah.
