It was a founding Member Society of the American Institute of Physics. The Division of Cosmic Physics of the American Physical Society (APS) was founded in 1970. In 1978, it was renamed the Division of Astrophysics. The object of the division is the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of astrophysics.
