Dougherty, Patrick, 1945-

Patrick Dougherty (1945- ) is a white North Carolina-based artist and sculptor. Originally from Oklahoma, Dougherty grew up in North Carolina and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967. Dougherty has exhibited his more than 300 giant outdoor art installations constructed of hard woods and tree saplings in venues across North Carolina, the United States, and Europe. He has also exhibited in Australia and Japan. Venues are chiefly museums, galleries, botanical gardens, arboretums, zoos, and university campuses. North Carolina venues where he has exhibited since the 1980s include Ackland Art Museum, Biltmore Estate, Davidson College, Fayetteville Museum of Art, Guilford College, Mint Museum, North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, North Carolina Zoo, Penland School of Craft, Sarah P. Duke Gardens, and Wilmington Museum of Art. Titles of Dougherty's work include Running in Circles (1996); Simple Pleasures (2001); Just Around the Corner (2003); Catawampus (2008); Monks' Cradle (2012); Out in Front (2013); Waltz in the Woods (2015); and Far Flung (2018).
