Smyth, Frederick, 1819-1899
Variant namesFrederick Smyth (1819-1899), thirty-second governor of New Hampshire, was born in Candia, NH. In 1839, he moved to Manchester, NH where he was employed for ten years as clerk and proprietor of a store. Smyth became Manchester city clerk in 1849 and later served four terms as Manchester's mayor. He was elected governor in 1865 and reelected in 1866. Smyth later served as one of the board of managers of the National Homes for Disabled Soldiers and as president of the Concord and Montreal Railroad. He died in Hamilton, Bermuda, at his winter home on April 22, 1899.
