Merchant, of North Branch, Branchburg Township, Somerset County, New Jersey; conducted a general store begun earlier by others: Brush & Bartow, 1837-1839; Bartow & Van Nest, 1840 until at least 1848; Abram Van Nest, ca. 1853-1887; estate of Abram Van Nest (James D. Vanderveer, executor), 1887-1898; and Abram Van Nest Van der Veer, 1898-1919.
Van der Veer (1868-1931) was the son of James D. Vanderveer (1838-1913), who in turn was the son-in-law of Abram Van Nest (1811-1887). James D. Vanderveer was a physician in North Branch in 1866, and in Liberty Corner, Bernards Township, Somerset County, from 1867 until at least 1882. Van Nest's wife was a member of the Ten Eyck family.
