Charles W Donald joined the British Whaling Exploration (from Dundee), 1892-1893 as a scientific member of staff on board Active . The expedition was organized to investigate the commercial possibilities of whaling in the Antarctic. Donald conducted scientific work in the Joinville Island group and northern Trinity Peninsular. William Speirs Bruce who later led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904 undertook scientific work on board the Balena during the same expedition.
