Hulburt, Hugh M.

Hugh McKinney Hulburt was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, on October 27, 1917. He earned his B.A. at Carroll College in 1938 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Wisconsin in 1942. During 1942–1943 as a National Research Fellow studied with Henry Eyring at Princeton.

Hulburt taught at Hunter College (1944–1946) and Catholic University (1946–1951). During this time he was also a consultant at the Houdry Process Corporation and the Chemical Construction Corporation. From 1952 to 1956 he was director of research at the Chemical Construction Corporation. Between 1956 and 1963 he held various positions with the American Cyanamid Company.

In the fall of 1963 Hulburt accepted an appointment at Northwestern University as professor of chemical engineering. He chaired the department of chemical engineering from 1964 to 1970. While on leave of absence in 1970–1971. Hulburt served as visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. From 1975 to 1980 he was associate dean of Northwestern's Graduate School and in 1980 he was named associate dean for planning and development of the Technological Institute.

Hulburt was appointed editor of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, Process Design and Development in 1962.

Hulbert was twice married. He and his first wife, Ann Podlucky, had two daughters, Susan (1946) and Margery (1954). Hulbert and his second wife, Pauline, had a son, William, born in 1958.

Hulburt died on March 22, 1987.
