Methodist minister and educator.
Earl David Clarence Brewer was born 26 May 1914. He attended Rutherford Junior College, B. Ph. 1932; Emory University, B.D. 1937; Duke University, M.A. 1947; University of North Carolina, Ph. D. 1951. Brewer began his career as a Methodist minister in 1938 with the Western North Carolina Conference. In 1946 he accepted a position as an instructor in the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He was appointed as a professor of Sociology and Religion at Emory in 1956. In 1982 Brewer was named Charles Howard Candler Professor of Sociology of Religion. Brewer assumed Faculty Emeritus status at Emory in 1985.
