A graduate of Harvard College and Law School, Loring received a LL.B. in 1874 and a LL.D. in 1901. He served as Assistant Attorney General of Massachusetts (1875-1878), justice of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts (1899-19190, and a lecturer at Harvard Law School (1920-1929). Holliday was secretary of the Harvard Law School.
