Founded by James Cunningham in 1838, in Rochester, N.Y., the James Cunningham Company designed and made carriages, hearses and ambulances until 1915. They produced automobiles from 1907 to 1936. During the 1920s and 1930s they produced airplanes and airplane parts and in the 1930s designed small tanks and patented treads for half-track vehicles. They worked on the development of the Vincent crossbar switch in the 1950s and continued in business as Cunningham Information Switching Systems, making electronic components into the 1990s.
