Benjamin Benedikt was born on January 7, 1886 in Mattersdorf (today Mattersburg, Austria). His father was Adolf Benedikt. After training at the Israelitische Lehrerbildungs-Anstalt in Würzburg, he began working as a teacher of religion in Vienna's Jewish public schools in 1909. He apparently retired in 1920 for medical reasons, and lived thereafter on a pension while also selling pre-printed medical forms. Benedikt lived in Vienna's eighth district with his wife and two children, Lucie and Edmund. In 1938, the children were sent to England on a Kindertransport . Benedikt and his wife managed to leave Vienna for New York in 1941, and the family was reunited in New York in 1943.
