Asa Smallidge Knowles was the third president of Northeastern University. He served as president from 1959 to 1975. Under Asa Smallidge Knowles's leadership, Northeastern University expanded its academic offerings, all of its academic programs were accredited, enrollment doubled, and the number of resident students increased dramatically. Northeastern University's physical plant grew to include five campuses, and its financial assets experienced significant growth. He was president during the period when the University faced various student rights protests, and upheaval caused by the Black Power movement, and the Vietnam Conflict.
