Richard Hetherington O'Kane, U.S. Naval officer, was born in 1911 in Durham, New Hampshire. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1934 and attended Submarine School. Her served in the submarines WAHOO and TANG during World War II, and together they sunk 55 Japanese vessels, one of the top records of all time. When TANG was sunk, he was captured by the Japanese and held in a prison camp until VJ Day. He received the Medal of Honor in 1946. O'Kane attended the Naval War College and retired from the Navy in 1957. He died on February 16, 1994. He is author of Clear the Bridge! and WAHOO.
