Thomas Knowles of New Bedford, Massachusetts, joined Company C of the United States Army's 101st Engineer Regiment, 26th Division, before September 1917, and traveled to France later that month. In mid-1918, he was injured in active combat at the front, and spent around two months recovering in military hospitals. In the fall of 1918, he was assigned to press "section G 2-D" at headquarters in Paris, and traveled with the section's field headquarters in France, Luxembourg, and Germany. Knowles returned to Boston in March 1919.
