Grant, Gabriel, 1826-1912
Gabriel Grant (1826-1912), a Newark, N.J. physician and Civil War surgeon. In 1854, Grant served on a special health commission to combat the cholera epidemic in Newark. During the Civil War, Grant was surgeon of the 2nd Infantry Regiment of New Jersey Volunteers and French's Brigade, was designated Surgeon of the United States Volunteers by Congress, and was later placed in command of the U.S. Army Hospital at Madison, Ind. He served at the battles of Bull Run, Fair Oaks, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Vicksburg.
