Herman W. Lewis, died 2014, was Head of Cellular Biology Section, Division of Biological and Medical Sciences of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and liason to the NIH Advisory Committee. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in zoology from the University of Illinois. He earned a PhD in genetics from the University of California. Before joining the administration of the NSF, Lewis was an assistant professor of biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 1954 to 1961, and associate professor of biology at Michigan State University, Oakland. Lewis was an organizer for Asilomar I (1973) and was a participant at planning meetings and at Asilomar (1976).
