King of England, Scotland, and Ireland, 1625-1649. The reign of Charles I was marked by a power struggle between the monarchy and parliament that resulted in Civil War, 1642-1649. War ended with the overthrow of the monarchy and establishment of the Republic under Oliver Cromwell. King Charles I was taken prisoner, tried, sentenced to death, and beheaded 30 January 1649.
