John Espy Watts was graduated from Davidson College in 1886. While a student, he was a member of the Philanthropic Society. After graduation, he taught in Georgia and practiced law in North Carolina. He was Superintendent of Schools in Cameron, Texas and superintendent of an orphanage in File's Valley, Texas.
