David Clapp was well-known as a printer in Boston, Ma. Born in Dorchester, Ma. in 1806, he was educated locally and began working as a tanner at the age of 13. In 1822, he became an apprentice at John Cotton's printing shop in Boston. Although he finished his apprenticeship in 1827, he continued working forCotton until 1831 when he started his own business. Henry Hull was his partner for a brief period of time. Clapp was a member of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association, the New-England Historic Genealogical Society, Saint Matthew's Church, and the Boston Old School Boys Association. He married Mary Elizabeth Tucker in 1835 and they had six children. He died on May 10, 1893.

David Clapp, Jr. (1806-1893) was a resident of Dorchester, Mass., until 1822 when he was apprenticed to John Cotton ( - ), a Boston printer. Clapp purchased that establishment in 1834 and devoted himself to general book and job printing and publishing. Among the items issued from his press were the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal and the New England Historical and Genealogical Register.
