James H. Dakin (1806-1852), an architect, was born in Massachusetts, was a student of A. J. Davis, and was a member of the architectural firm Town and Davis. This firm designed the Capitol of North Carolina, New York University, and the Marine Pavilion Hotel at Rockaway, New York. In the 1830s, Dakin moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and worked in partnership with his brother, Charles Bingley Dakin, and the architect James Gallier. Dakin designed the state capitol in Baton Rouge. In New Orleans, he designed St. Patrick's Church, the Merchants Exchange, Christ Church, and the Veranda Hotel.

Louisiana's Old State Capitol at Baton Rouge, a Neo-Gothic medieval castle overlooking the Mississippi River, was designed in 1847 by James Harrison Dakin, a native New York architect with the firm of Dakin & Gallier in New Orleans. It was completed in December 1849.
