Born and educated in Germany, classics professor, Ovidian scholar, and author taught in Germany and Italy before emigrating to the United States shortly before the start of World War II.

In 1945, he was appointed vice-chairman of the languages department at Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, where his wife Amalie Goldmann Lenz taught as well.
