Edward Lander, born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1816, graduated from Harvard in 1835 and stutied law. He served in the Mexican War and from 1853-1857 served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington Territory. He practiced law in Washington, D.C. following a period as counsel for the Hudson Bay Company. He died in Washington, D.C. in 1907.

Frederick West Lander, born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1822, died as a result of wounds received fighting in the Civil War (1862). He was Chief Civil Engineer for Governor Isaac I. Stevens of Washington Territory and explored the area from the headwaters of the Mississippi to Puget Sound to find a pass for the Pacific Railroad.
