Charles Hampton was born in 1923 in Tacoma, Wash. He enlisted in the Army at Tacoma, Wash. in 1943 and at the time of his enlistment had completed one year of college and was unmarried. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Company H of the 86th Infantry Regiment, later with the 10th Mountain Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, the 226th Engineering Company and Company D of the 126th Mountain Engineering Battalion. He subsequently transferred to Fort Swift, Tex. before being sent overseas to Italy. Hampton was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions at Mt. Serrasiccia on February 1945 and was awarded a second Bronze Star medal for action at the Po River in April 1945. He attained the rank of Sergeant. Hampton died in 2005.
