Construction of the LSU Union was authorized in 1958 and funded by a $1.7 million allocation from the Board of Supervisors, as well as a $10.00 student fee. Construction began in 1962 and the building opened on January 6, 1964. The LSU Union was conceived as a central hub where students could spend their leisure time in a variety of pursuits. It originally featured, among other things, study rooms and a browsing library, a cafeteria and snack bar, a barbershop, separate men's and women's quiet rest areas, a bowling alley, a music listening room, and a bookstore. The the building was expanded in 1987, giving the bookstore a badly needed second floor. Extensive renovations began again in 2006, including a major renovation of the theater and a four story addition on the southeast side of the building. The LSU Union was renamed the LSU Student Union in 2007.
