Joseph Stettner was born in Munich, Germany on September 8, 1901 and enlisted in the Army on November 9, 1942 at Chicago, Ill. At the time of enlistment he was divorced, had completed grammar school and working in the sheet metal trade. He joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. and was assigned to Company L of the 87th Infantry Regiment. Stettner died on March 4, 1997 in Laramie, Wyoming.

Joe Stettner was born in Munich and migrated to Chicago, Illinois in the 1920s. Stettner was an avid mountain climber who along with his brother Paul became known as pioneers in mountain climbing. It is believed that the Stettner brothers were the first mountaineers to use carbiners. The two of them made their first ascent on the east face of Long's Peak in Colorado in 1927, but it remained unrecorded until the site was rediscovered in 1935. Stettner was a member of the American Alpine Club, Chicago Mountaineering Club and the German Alpine Club.
