Murphy Roy Hinson was born October 26, 1891, in Gadsden County, Florida. He received an A.B.E. from the University of Florida in 1924, followed by a Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in 1925. In 1931, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from George Peabody College. He then entered the teaching profession in Florida. In 1927, he was appointed State Supervisor of High Schools, and served until July 1932 when he was appointed State Director of Instruction.
In 1936 he joined the faculty of Florida State University as an Associate Professor of Education. In 1937 he became a full professor. On November 4, 1921, Dr. Hinson married Elberta Hentz, and had a son, Murphy Roy Hinson, Jr. Hinson died in 1952.
