Shoemaking business and general store started in 1867 by Nikolaus Woll, a German immigrant, in San Jose, Illinois.
As factory- made shoes became available in the 1890s and sales fell off, he switched to selling groceries, dry goods and rubber products. In 1967, the general merchandise stock was liquidated and the business dealt primarily in antiques until 1980. The fourth generation of the Woll family converted the business into an international consulting firm. It was recognized by the Illinois State Historical Society Business Program in 1985.
