Central Michigan University was called Central State Teachers College from 1927 until 1941. When the report was written, Helen L. Johnson was a second grade supervisor at CSTC and Ann Louise Welch a kindergarten supervisor at CSTC. Helen L. John (Sept. 9, 1901-Nov. 26, 1989) graduated from CMU in 1922. She earned a B.S. in 1925, a master's degree from Columbia U. in 1932. Helen was an associate professor of education at CMU, 1929-1965. She taught school in Grand Rapids, 1920-1927, and one year at Kinney School, Mount Pleasant. She was an active member of many organizations and the first female mayor protem of Mount Pleasant in 1957. She did not marry. (This information is from her obituary.) Ann Louis Welch (Aug. 17, 1904-Oct. 18, 1998) was a teacher at CMU laboratory school, 1929-1933 and 1935-1966. She was an active member of many organizations. Ann Louise did not marry. (This information is from her obituary.) Helen R. Emmons was the Head of the Dept. of Early Education at CSTC, 1926-1934. She earned a Life Certificate from the Chicago College of Education and taught kindergarten in the Presbyterian Social Services Board in Chicago. In 1915 Miss Emmons taught kindergarten in Fargo, N.D. She came to CSTC in 1916 and became the head of the Dept. by 1926. Miss Emmons earned a B.A. from Evanston National College of Education. She was a member of the Association for Childhood Education and helped established kindergartens throughout Mich. Miss Emmons is credited in this paper for her many contributions to establish the CSTC Elementary School, also called the laboratory or Training School, following its burning and total loss in 1933.
