E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. Engineering Dept.

Hide Profile

The Engineering Dept. was created in 1903 to perform all civil and mechanical engineering services for the Du Pont Company, particularly in the area of plant and equipment design and construction. The department was formed from the Engineering Division of the High Explosives Operating Dept., which had designed what were then the company's most advanced production facilities.

The Technical Division of the Engineering Dept. was established on September 1, 1931 under Edward L. Rice and Raymond P. Genereaux. In 1935 it absorbed the Chemical Engineering Group of the Chemical Dept., which had been established on July 1, 1929 under T. H. Chilton. The group worked out of the Experimental Station and did chemical engineering research designed to improve production processes. This facility was renamed the Engineering Research Laboratory in May 1946. The Technical Division was renamed the Development Engineering Division in February 1945, the Engineering Research Division in 1960, and the Engineering Research & Development Division in 1969.
