South Carolina family. James Adger (1777-1858) was a wealthy merchant of Charleston, S.C. He married Sarah Elizabeth Ellison (1783-1856), and their children included Margaret Milligan Adger (1807-1884), who married Thomas Smyth (1808-1873); Jane Ann Adger (1822-1899); James Adger (1812-1881); Robert Adger (1814-1891); Susan Dunlap Adger (1808-1884); William Adger (1816-1853); and John Bailey Adger (1810-1899), a Presbyterian minister, missionary to Turkey, and professor at Columbia Theological Seminary (S.C.). John Bailey Adger married Elizabeth Keith Shrewsbury in June 1834. In August 1834 they sailed from Boston, Massachusetts to Smyrna (Turkey) as missionaries.
