Burch was the fireman on the train which brought Stanhope O'Connor, five blacktrackers, Stanhope's wife, sister and some press representatives from Melbourne (probably from Essendon Railway Station) to Benalla in pursuit of the Kelly gang. The train left Melbourne at 10 pm on Sunday 27 June 1880, arriving at Benalla at 1 pm. Burch then went on the pilot engine from Benalla to Glenrowan station. For his part, Burch was allocated a reward of £104-4-6.
