Friend, Kate H., b. ca. 1856-1949

Born in Boligee, Alabama, Kate Harrison Friend (b. ca. 1856-1949) was the daughter of Nathaniel Friend (ca. 1835- ca.1885) and Araminta Harrison (b. ca. 1840). After the death of her father around 1885, Friend moved with her mother to Waco, Texas, where they ran a private school. A descendant of Pocahontas on her father’s side, and President William Henry Harrison on her mother’s, Friend was an active member of her community, involved in women’s clubs and humanitarian projects. She was also a writer and teacher, known for her vast knowledge on Shakespeare. Friend later taught and became a principal in the Waco School District. She was also the arts editor for the Waco Times-Herald, and the editor of her own society paper, Artesia . In addition to organizing the Waco Shakespeare Club and founding the city’s first animal shelter and park system, Friend served as the president of the Waco City Federation of Women’s Clubs and as a chairwoman for the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs. At the time of her death in 1949, Friend had worked with the Waco Humane Society for nearly forty years.
