Shadrach Bond was born at Fredericktown, Md. on Nov. 24, 1773. He came to Illinois in 1794 and engaged in farming in what is now Monroe County. On Nov. 27, 1810, he married Achsah Bond at Nashville, Tenn. Earlier in May of 1805, Bond had been elected to fill a vacany in the Indiana Territorial Assembly. He continued in this office until the Illinois territory was separated from Indiana in 1809. With the outbreak of the War of 1812, he enlisted as a private and rose to the rank of colonel before leaving the army to enter Congress. Bond served as the first territorial delegate from Illinois from Dec. 3, 1812 - Oct. 3, 1814, when he was appointed receiver of public money for the territory. After Illinois became a state, Bond was elected as its first Governor and was inaugurated at Kaskaskia on Oct. 16, 1818. He died at his residence near Kaskaskia on April 12, 1832 and is buried at Chester, Illinois.
