A businessman, lawyer, and legislator, Bernard E. Epton served seven terms in the Illinois General Assembly as a representative (Republican) from the twenty-fourth district (1969-1982). Born in Chicago in 1921, he attended local public schools and received degrees from the University of Chicago and DePaul Law School. Senior partner in the law firm of Epton, Mullin, and Druth; vice president and director of Potter-Englewood Corporation. Actively involved in several community, professional, and religious organizations.
Chosen as assistant minority leader (1977-1978) in the Illinois House of Representatives. Served on the Insurance Committee (1969-1972; chairman, 1973-1976 and 1979-1982; 1977-1978) and chaired the Illinois Insurance Laws Study Commission. Member of many other committees. Retired form the House in 1982; returned to law practice. Republican candidate for mayor of Chicago in 1983; narrowly defeated by Harold Washington. Also lost mayoral election in 1987. Died in Ann Arbor, Michigan, December 13, 1987; buried in Chicago.
