Author, educator, and business consultant, of Columbia, S.C.; authority on the development and classification of freshwater varieties of sponges; native of Charlotte, N.C.; educated at University of North Carolina: A.B. 1921, M.A. 1925, Ph. D. in zoology, 1929; instructor at Charlotte High School (1921-1923), University of North Carolina (1923-1925 and 1927-1929), and University of Tennessee Medical School (1925-1927).
Served at USC as professor of biology (1929-1964), Dean of Men (1956-1960), Director of Student Activities, Faculty Chairman of Athletics; as USC faculty representative in the old Southern Conference, led the 1953 walkout of the seven schools that formed the Atlantic Coast Conference; Consultant for South Carolina Chamber of Commerce (1945-1964); member of NCAA Advisory Committee on Television, NCAA Advisory Commission on Television Legislation; president, Atlantic Coast Conference (1953-1954, 1962-1963).
