Received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural college). He received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University in 1939 and joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939 and became Head of the Department (1950-1964).

Clyde F. Smith joined the faculty of the North Carolina State College Entomology Department in September 1939. He served as Head of N.C. State's Entomology Department from 1950 to 1964. After his tenure as head of the Entomology Department, Smith returned to N.C. State to do research on cucumber and peach insects and he continued to publish on aphids. In 1972-1973, Smith served as president of the Southeastern Branch of the Entomological Society of America.

Smith received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Utah State University (then Utah State Agricultural College). He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1939.
